Erin Earth developed as a response to an emerging crisis of the 1990’s. The human race began to be aware of the crisis the planet was facing and was challenged to do more to care for Earth and to live more sustainably. In 1998, the Sisters began the process of establishing the Erin Earth Biodiversity Garden. This complex is now a sustainable living education centre built on part of the old Mount Erin Convent land at the end of Kildare Avenue. It continues to be financed by the Presentation Sisters and supported by staff and a wonderful network of community groups and volunteers.
Erin Earth now proudly displays a solar passive home, a mud brick information gazebo, a volunteer hub, drought tolerant native gardens, vegetable gardens, propagating sheds and a small dam and wetlands that have become a haven for frogs, birds and lizards. A disused barren piece of land has been transformed into a teaching and learning oasis. Erin Earth is now run by a Board who take responsibility for all aspects of the ministry.
